2016 Gamay Noir Sandstone Vineyard

Aromas of raspberries, cherries, toast and vanilla with notes of charred rosemary and leather

$29.95

Out of stock

TASTING NOTES

Bright garnet in the glass with intense aromas of raspberries, cherries, toast and vanilla with notes of charred rosemary and leather. Medium bodied with flavours of fresh cherries and oak with fine ripe tannins, bright acidity and a refreshing but savoury finish.

Decant and serve in large Burgundy-style glasses, slightly cool (18-20oC).  Excellent served alongside classic Bistro fare, grilled or roasted poultry and red meats, game, lightly smoked meats and semi-firm cheeses. Unlike many wines made from Gamay, this powerfully structured version will reward cellaring for up to 10 years with a cornucopia of new aromas and mellowed textures.

WINEMAKING NOTES

Sandstone is one of the top Gamay vineyards in the Niagara region if not the country. Planted in 1983 with a rare, old clone of Gamay Noir, the Willms family manage this special vineyard with a minimal interventionist approach utilizing cover crops between rows, low yields and integrated pest management techniques. Four Mile Creek is one of the hottest, sunniest sub-appellations in Niagara. This combined with the dry, crumbly, Sandstone loam soils and old vines ensures serious ripeness and remarkable power in every bottle of our Sandstone Vineyard Gamay.

Hand-harvested in late-October and early November at an average of 21.2 brix. Crushed and destemmed before cold soak, fermentation and maceration in stainless steel over 14 days. Combination of free run and light press juices add both delicacy as well as colour and tannin extract to the wines. 100% malolactic fermentation with ageing in 25% second use and 75% third and fourth use French oak barrels for 12 months.

2017 Burger Blend Gamay / Pinot Noir

A delicious blend of Gamay Noir & Pinot Noir … perfect for backyard barbecues.

$14.95

AVAILABLE AT THE LCBO

TASTING & FOOD NOTES

For us, “burgers” evoke memories of backyard barbecues, of sunshine and warm evenings, of good food and laughter with friends and family. The goal of this wine was to produce a fruit-laden and refreshing red that represents excellent value and one that would bring out the best in your burger. A challenging task since the perfect burger can be a very personal and unique creation. Consider the traditional elements: the acidity of pickle, the sweetness of relish and ketchup and the spice of BBQ sauce and mustard. Our final combination for Burger Blend is a satisfying mix of ripe red berry, balanced with acidity and a smooth, round fruity mouthful that can be enjoyed alone or with your favourite summer backyard fare, burgers most certainly included! Respect your burger… serve it with Burger Blend!

WINEMAKING NOTES

The original 13th Street Burger Blend was produced in the late 90’s and was an eclectic mix of a wine which incorporated pretty much every red variety in the wineries stables. After a long hiatus we are pleased to announce Burger Blend is back! The 2017 is primarily a combination of just two varieties: Gamay Noir and Pinot Noir – two of our most important red varietals.

VINTAGE NOTES

The winter of 2016/2017 was again mild, yet a cool spring delayed bud-burst. Once the summer finally started it was relatively cool and rainy. Luckily September saw full sun and heat warm the vines to complete phenolic ripeness. Harvest started late in mid-September, commencing with Pinot and Chardonnay for sparkling and continued with other whites and early-ripening reds. The beautiful weather lasted well into the fall, allowing for long hang time for later ripening varieties. Overall yields were moderate to high with very high quality throughout. The wines are characterized by both freshness and structure across the portfolio, with potential for enjoyable early consumption or the opportunity to cellar wines for the medium-to-long-term.

RESPECT YOUR BURGER: serve it with 13th Street Burger Blend!

2017 Cabernet Merlot

Ruby red in the glass, the nose is intense with notes of candied red fruit, cassis, spice and rosemary.

$19.95

TASTING NOTES

Ruby red in the glass, the nose is intense with notes of candied red fruit, cassis, spice and rosemary. Rich and ripe on the palate with firm, youthful tannins from the Cabernet Sauvignon and spiced cassis and cedar notes in the juicy mid-palate. Light oak ageing adds a pleasant toasted character. Although suitable for medium-term cellaring, it will also pair nicely now with grilled and roasted meats such as duck, lamb, beef and wild game. Enjoy this wine at 18-20 degrees in large Bordeaux-style glasses which will encourage the release of its multitude of flavours and aromas.

WINEMAKING NOTES

Both varieties were handpicked from our Lakeshore Farm vineyard in the Creek Shores appellation of the Niagara Peninsula starting in early-October and ending in the first week of November. Both varieties were handled separately and after manual sorting, were crushed and destemmed, then fermented in stainless steel tanks with cold soak and post-fermentation skin contact totaling two weeks. Approximately ½ of the Cabernet Sauvignon was moved to 500 and 600 litre seasoned oak casks as well as second and third use French barriques. The Merlot was also aged in 600 litre seasoned oak casks. Both varieties underwent malolactic fermentation and were left on fine lees with regular rack and return over 9 months before bottling in July 2018 after light fining and filtration.
