Gamay 2023

Tasting Notes

Another delicious Gamay, reconfirming this grape variety is arguably the most gulpable red grape in Ontario (and beyond). The nose is complex with fruity aromas of red raspberry, plum skin, aromatic herbs, along with black pepper and stony minerality. Fresh with vibrant fresh fruit on the palate with flavours of tart red currant and cranberry, fresh raspberry, sour cherry, violets, fresh thyme with black pepper with light tannins, balancing acidity and a long chalky finish.

Serve lightly chilled so it feels cool in your mouth (13-15oC) and enjoy it with a range of flavourful everyday favourites like charcuterie, pizza with buffalo mozzarella, mushrooms and beets with goat cheese or pasta Bolognese.

Harvesting for each vineyard took place in mid-to-late September and early October and the grapes were vinified separately. After crushing and de-stemming the grapes were moved to stainless steel fermenters where the primary fermentation took place over 3 weeks using different cap management techniques: pump over, push down and delestage. After pressing, malolactic fermentation was completed in tank and the wines were kept separate until final blending and bottling in February 2023.

A light-bodied, loveable Ontario Gamay from 13th Street Winery that opens with alluring aromas of candied cherry, raspberries, and dried herbs. This Gamay is unoaked, providing a pure, naked expression of the grape that shines on a silky palate of vibrant red fruit entangled in energetic acidity. Bright, mineral, and fruity!

Deeper berry fruit with a decidedly earthy feel and even reductive in the way it holds back. Quite herbal, nearly Amaro and yet there is great freshness and spirit to speak of place and how much this gamay fights alive. Crispy and crunchy, intensity from start to finish with the possibilities for aging much higher than many of its peers. Drink 2025-2028. Tasted blind at #NWACS24, June 2024.
