OUR FARM STORY
Rooted in Niagara since 1908, the Whitty family’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and deep respect for the land. What began as Whitty Farms over a century ago continues today on the same fertile soils, guided by a commitment to quality, sustainability, and stewardship.
At the heart of this legacy is Doug Whitty, President of 13th Street Winery and a third-generation farmer. Carrying forward the vision of his grandfather and father, Doug has spent his life cultivating not only exceptional fruit but a thriving agricultural community. A graduate of the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Doug’s global experiences—from Japan to Central America—have shaped his thoughtful and forward-looking approach to farming.
Under his leadership, Whitty Farms has embraced sustainable practices while maintaining its reputation for excellence. Doug’s contributions to the industry have been widely recognized: he served as President of the Niagara Peninsula Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, was named Grape King by the Grape Growers of Ontario in 2017, and received the prestigious Tony Aspler Cuvée Award of Excellence in 2019. Beyond the vineyard, Doug’s passions for contemporary art, local music, and classic Canadian treats—especially butter tarts—reflect the creative spirit behind 13th Street Winery.
Working alongside Doug is his wife, Karen Whitty, General Manager of 13th Street Winery. With a background in biochemistry from McMaster University, Karen began her career with Agriculture Canada, contributing nearly two decades of research and innovation at the Vineland Agricultural Research Station. In 2007, she brought her expertise home to Whitty Farms, where she transformed operations through strategic leadership in administration, marketing, and value-added initiatives.
Today, Karen’s vision continues to shape 13th Street Winery, elevating the brand to national recognition—including being named the #1 Winery in Ontario and #2 in Canada in 2022. Her blend of scientific insight and business acumen has been instrumental in driving growth while preserving the winery’s authentic roots.
The Next Generation
The Whitty family legacy continues with Doug and Karen’s three sons, each contributing their own talents and perspectives.
Luke, the eldest, is a marketing professional based in Toronto. A graduate of Brock University in Media and Communication Studies, Luke has worked with leading brands such as the LCBO, Under Armour, Cadillac, and Manchu Wok. When he’s not crafting campaigns, Luke is best known for his beloved bulldog, Humphrey.
Benjamin, the middle son, brings a deep passion for wine and viticulture. With hands-on harvest experience in both Niagara and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, he now serves as Director of Sales at 13th Street Winery. Since joining full-time in 2020, Benjamin has become a vital link between Whitty Farms and the winery, while also representing St. Catharines on the Ontario Grape Growers Committee.
Thomas, the youngest, combines business expertise with a love of hospitality and sport. A graduate of the University of Guelph in Food & Agricultural Business, Thomas has worked with OMAFRA and RBC’s Commercial Agriculture Team before joining the family business. As Director of Operations, he oversees guest experiences at the winery. Outside of work, Thomas competes professionally in the National Lacrosse League with the Buffalo Bandits.
From vineyard to glass, the Whitty family’s story is woven into every bottle at 13th Street Winery—an enduring legacy built on passion, innovation, and a profound connection to Niagara’s land.
